A useful utility on the cover disk of Australian PC authority ( http://www.pcauthority.com.au/ ) is Paragon’s Hard Disk Manager (9.5 SE)

I am often confronted with students who have trashed their Hard Drives (or the drive have magically trashed themselves). This utility allows you to create a complete backup of the drive. Additionally if you want to upgrade your HDD to a bigger one it has a wizard to do this.

Also included is Magix Music Maker Silver for those of you who want to create your own “original ” music.

JJ has just given me a link to a page that links to lots of free(?) utilities – nicely organised.

Was just playing around with my new USB Drive and realised you can create your own icon for Windows explorer.

1. Create an icon (duh!) – use Google to find an icon creator if you dont have one (e.g. GIMP or Paint.net with an addin) , and place in the root folder of your removable drive.

2. Create a text file (using notepad) called Autorun.inf (if there is already one it is likely to have an ico file setting already so all you need to do is change the ico file name).

The Autorun file only needs

Autorun.inf——————–

[autorun]
icon = .\NameofIconFile.ico

Bonus is that it can fix filters that are installed by some DVD programs (such as quicktime). The filters install Digital Rights management that can prevent other programs from burning when the installed software (like quicktime) is deinstalled.

Not sure about the legality, but for students (and you) to use youTube videos (offline) in presentations (especially if your organisation has a firewall that blocks YouTube) you can try http://www.videodownloadx.com/ which will allow them to download the videos.
